Waiting
We observed this young black bear sitting at the base of a big tree. For a while it moved about restlessly, calling for its mother but never leaving the close proximity of that tree. After about 10 minutes of watching the cub, it finally settled on its haunches and sat very still as if waiting for something. Shortly after that it got to its feet and ran off into the nearby underbrush... We assume that mama had returned.
The Gathering
My husband is a wildlife photographer. During early winter in 2016 he visited Ptarmigan Cirque in Kananaskis Country to try and capture some images of Ptarmigan in their winter glory. This painting is based on a series of he shot during that visit. I was first attracted to the alertness of the central bird, while the other just got on with their daily business.
Three Siblings
My husband is a wildlife photographer (albertanaturephotography.com). This is painting is based on a series of photos he took in a local Calgary park and depicts unfledged Great Horned owl chicks. It is not unusual for the owls to have multiple chicks and they can be of varying size depending on when they hatched as there could be days between them. Great Horned owls take life-long mates.
