Totem Inspired

Seal - On a Box

This image was inspired by a box that sits unobtrusively as part of an exhibition in the Great Hall at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

The Moon and the Watchmen

This painting is inspired by the A totem pole at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay, Skidegate. In totem imagery, the Moon lightens the darkness of the night and is considered the night time protector of the earth and humans. The Moon, which is a symbol of power, was traditionally used to show status. As such the was the exclusive crest of only a few high ranking chiefs. Northwest coast First Nations legend tells us of the Raven who is said to have released the Moon into the sky.

Raven & Man

This painting was inspired by the top section of the Beaver Crest Totem Pole that was carved by Nisga’a artist Norman Tait. This whole totem can be viewed in Stanley Park, Vancouver. There are many legends about Raven and Man. Totem symbolism describes the ravens as variously as a teacher, a guide, mischievous and full of mirth.

Eagle - Duncan B.C.

This painting was inspired by the top carving from the first pole commissioned for Duncan’s totem pole collection.
